The Queer Cooperative (LGBTQIA+)

The Queer Cooperative is an LGBTQIA social group, aiming to find other like minded friends and allies! This social support program is aimed at young people aged between 16 and 21, and provides for diverse genders, sexes, and sexualities, or young people who are simply questioning their sexuality. It creates a safe, non-judgmental and pressure-free space for LGBTQIA young people, a sense of belonging, and an enjoyable space to socialise, learn about the LGBTQIA community, build up trust, respect and friendships, have fun, and access support if needed.

Objectives

Provide social support in a safe environment
Create a non-judgmental and no-pressure space for LGBT+young people
Learn about the LGBT+ community
Create a place for LGBT+ young people in the Mosman area to belong
Be respectful & tolerant of one another
Have fun & make new friends

Meetings & Activities

The group will meet on a regular basis throughout the year. Each meeting will have a fun, social activity to participate in, as well as a theme or area of interest that the group has identified they would like to discuss or learn about. For example, some themes that have already been flagged by the steering committee include mental health, sexual health, learning about LGBT+ services in Sydney, and healthy relationships.

Steering Committee

The formation of this group has come about as a result of an ongoing call for a social group of this kind in Mosman by local Mosman young people who identify with the LGBTQIA community. Mosman Youth Services has listened to these young people, and over the last 2 months has brought together a small steering committee of Mosman young people to develop the first LGBTQIA night. The steering committee has developed the objectives of the group (with accompanying research on other groups of this kind in the Northern Sydney area), and developed a program outline in conjunction with Mosman Youth Services.

If you are interested in joining the steering committee for The Queer Cooperative, please contact youth@mosman.nsw.gov.au or call the youth services team on 9978 4013
