Youth Volunteering

Our youth volunteering programs are a great way for young people who are in high school year 8 to year 12 to get involved in the community, develop new skills and meet new people! Volunteer programs run during the school terms at the Mosman Youth Centre and participants work on a variety of community based projects, events and initiatives. Volunteers also act as youth advisors by providing their ideas, opinions and aspirations for programs and services at the Mosman Youth Centre as well as in the Mosman Community.

Please note our Youth Volunteering opportunities are often at capacity. Completing an application form does not automatically secure a place in the program.

Current Youth Volunteer Programs:

Tuesday Youth Volunteer Committee

These groups meet on a weekly basis to organise projects and events for the community. It’s also a great place to learn skills in event management and project delivery. These groups are also responsible for supporting Mosman Council in the development of annual Youth Week initiatives (usual in April each year).

This group meets every Tuesday, 4.30-5.30pm during school term.

Participants are expected to be available each week to attend the meetings as well as any events / project commitments.

Applications to join our Tuesday Volunteer Committee open next week! If you would like to join for this term, please complete the application form below or contact us at youth@mosman.nsw.gov.au

MYproject (self-directed volunteering)

MYproject is for young people who may already have an idea they are passionate about that has a community benefit to local young people they want to pursue. Pitch your idea to us and if it benefits young people, is community led and within scope we’ll support you to make it a reality.

Youth services staff support and mentor you through the process, but you drive the project; it will be up to you to decide the when and how the project is delivered. For example you could create a community art project, organise a youth event, organise an environment sustainability campaign or run a workshop/club at the youth centre.

Previous MYproject initiatives have included:

• Facilitating a hanging community art display at the youth centre entry

• Organising the a band night at the Youth Centre with local youth acts

• Organising a short cultural exchange online with a Youth Centre in Japan

• Organising a book donation drive to support a local charity

Not all MYproject ideas will be possible to get off the ground, but if you can demonstrate the community benefit and have a passion to drive your project we will do our best to support and guide you.

Why get involved?

These programs are an excellent opportunity to learn key industry skills and gain a competitive edge in the job market. Many students also volunteer to contribute to their Duke of Edinburgh Award and CAS requirements and we’re happy to supervise you in these instances.

Some reasons to join:

Get involved in the Mosman community and contribute your time to local initiatives

Develop valuable skills and gain a competitive edge in the job market

Meet like-minded young people

Complete Duke of Edinburgh Award and CAS hours

Participate as a Youth Advisor for Mosman Youth programs and have a platform to voice your opinions

Most importantly, youth volunteers get to shape their initiatives so it’s a great opportunity to bring your ideas to life!

What am I committing to?

Volunteering programs run in roughly ten week cycles, commencing at the beginning of each school term and we ask new volunteers to commit to at least 2 terms. Each group requires volunteers to meet for 1 hour weekly during term and we require participants to attend at least 80% of meetings and scheduled activities during a given term.

If you are participating in the MYproject program, commitment is flexible and depends on the scope of the project you wish to undertake.
